Intelligent and sophisticated air purification
lilian· Review provided by dyson.com.au · October 11, 2018
*Dyson Trial participant* Having used a regular Dyson desk fan for a number of years now, and being very satisfied with it, I was very excited to try out this purifying version and see how it compared. It did not disappoint.

Straight out of the box, it was a breeze to set up - just click in the filters and the covers and you’re all set to go. The filters will supposedly last for 12 months on the assumption you are using the fan for approximately 12 hours a day, so you get a pretty decent lifespan, especially if you don’t have it on all the time. You can also check the filter life on the display so you’re not unnecessarily changing it too early.

One of the things I liked the most with this one was the ability to set the oscillation (0, 45, 90, 180 or 350 degrees). If you’re cooling a large room, being able to rotate almost a full 360 degrees is a nifty feature, or if you’re like me and have it in a corner of the room then the 45 or 90 degree setting is perfect.

The optional Dyson Link app that you can download onto your smartphone is also a wonderful feature. It can be used like a second remote control, and will give you the same purification information that you can find on the fan display, but in much more detail. It gives you the ability to see at a glance what the indoor and outdoor air quality is like, and you can even access historical data to see what the fan has been filtering out throughout the last week or month. I did have some hiccups getting the fan to reconnect to the app after updating it, but overall it was a fairly smooth process.

Night mode is a nice touch for people who want the purification aspect overnight but don’t want to be kept up by a noisy fan. It utilises only the quieter airflow settings, and I can attest to the fact that it is very silent. Especially if you’re used to a conventional bladed fan, I think you will be surprised by how quiet it really is.

Because this version is a cooling fan only (there is a hot + cold model), you might be worried about what to do in colder months when you don’t want the fan making it colder than it already is, but you still want to take advantage of the purification aspect. Dyson have implemented a new “diffused mode”, which generates airflow from the rear of the machine rather than the front. As its name suggests, the airflow is also more diffused compared with the regular frontward airstream, in order to minimise the cooling effect.

Being someone who doesn’t largely suffer from allergies or hay fever, I can’t really comment as to the effectiveness of the purification, however I can assume that allergy sufferers, asthmatics, and pet owners will benefit from it greatly. Also, if you have children, or if you’re just like me and have a fear of getting your hair stuck in fan blades, then the benefit of these Dyson blade-less fans is obvious. The lack of blades also makes the machine ridiculously easy to clean.

As far as criticisms go, compared to my old Dyson desk fan, it is definitely a lot bulkier and heavier than I expected, making it a little cumbersome to move around. There is also no real easy way to grip the machine when moving it, as Dyson don’t recommend carrying it by the air multiplier (the round “fan” part), so you basically just have to grab is around the base and hope you don’t accidentally drop it. It would have been nice it there were some indented handgrips of sorts on the base to make for easier transportation.

The price is also going to be prohibitive to many people, but if air purification is a priority for you, then I think it is well worth the price for such a sophisticated and intelligent product.
If you have severe allergies you need this fan.

My son and I both have severe allergies and were having a terrible time adjusting to all the new allergens when we moved. A family member noticed and gifted us the DP04 and upon setup I saw a significant decrease in our congestion within an hour.

The app is fantastic and easy to use. You're able to view and manage all the setting from it and view graphs for each reading (which I prefer) when on the LED screen you are only able to view the number reading aside from graphs for the overall quality in real time and a 24 hr span.

In the winter I keep the purifying fan on auto and back flow to keep the air clean and it works fantastically at keeping all my numbers below the goal range that Dyson has preset. In the summer you can often find my fan set to 10 (max) and oscillating and I haven't had any issues with performance. The maximum speed is both high and pretty quiet given the power it provides. Overall we have also seen a significant decrease in pet odors.

The device is also pretty sturdy. I move the device around my house depending on my location and have accidentally bumped into the wall a couple of times and have seen no I'll affects.

I only have two minor complaints. Firstly, the fan is prettt large to be advertised as a desk model in my opinion. Secondly, I'd love to see the integration of the Google Voice Assistant in conjunction to Amazon's Alexa. I have not used nor do I plan on using the Alexa feature so I cannot comment on the actual performance there.

Overall, this fan is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone that I know but for those I know with allergies I tell them that they NEED this machine. My son and I have seen a significant improvement in our allergy symptoms when at home because of this purifying fan.
Dyson Pure Cool Desk Fan

As an dust allergy sufferer, I've been through a number of air filtration machines from other manufacturers. Although this product is marketed as a desk fan, it actually comes with in my opinion quite a good filtration cartridge. Whilst most air filters I have used commonly only come with HEPA filter, the Dyson Pure Cool comes with an activated charcoal filter and you can smell the difference, especially if you have a smoker in the house. Without the charcoal filter, air filter units over time can have a musky smell as moisture will tend to build up on the hepa filter. The unit also has a nice display and integration with a wifi app to tell you the quality of the air and how much pollution in it which is great.

Like most Dyson products, the design and engineering is excellent, putting on the filter catridges requires some coordination but it slotted into place after a few tries, I was wondering why Dyson just didn't have a cylindrical filter like other brands but it makes sense because of the way the fan is constructed the filter is better as 2 halves.

One thing that was great with this unit is carrying the fan a different location. Because of the circular bladeless design carrying it up a flight of stairs is nice and easy. And with 2 young children, this is probably the first time I didn't have to stress out about letting get too close to the fan

Another thing when I compare this fan with a cheapy conventional fan is the dust build up will be very minimal. Anyone who has ever used a cheap fan will know how dust can build up on the blades and the louvres of the fan. With the Dyson unit, due to the way the air flows through the unit, over time dust particle buildup within the unit will be minimal.

The unit comes with a remote that comes with it is really handy. I was skeptical at first but if you are using it in your room, it really saves you from having to get out of bed to turn down the fan. It also allows you to rotate and pivot the fan to your liking.

As a fan, the unit performs very well, the unit is able to throw a stream of air to quite a long distance and i find that it's quite a nicer even flow and it has more of a direction.

The question most people will have on their mind will of course be the price. However consider these factors when looking at the price

- a good HEPA filter can already cost somewhere around $300-400 dollars, these will be very simple units, with no monitoring of the air quality and no smart features, the filtration will most likely not have activated charcoal

- smart features and excellent Dyson build quality with a 2 year warranty

- the unit combines the best features of a fan and a filter and is safe to leave in a childs bedside without worrying about fingers getting hurt
How cool can a fan be?

I had been looking for an air purifier for a while to help my kids with allergies from dust, pollen and other allergens you get when you live in the bush.

Initially I had dismissed the Dyson Pure Cool due my misconception that it was "merely a fan with a bit of filtration" (this despite having Dyson vacuums and knowing their capabilities with air handling). So when I was offered one for trial, I was grateful and very pleasantly surprised.

Within 10 minutes of opening the box, my fan was setup, on my network, app installed on my iPad and Android phone and I was already experimenting with the settings. It was very easy to set up and the software was way better than I expected.

Aesthetically, the fan looks "cool" and with no blades, I can leave it running at night without worrying about kids walking into it.

Operationally, the fan goes from almost inaudible to slightly loud on the highest setting, but not intrusive. At the highest setting, it does blow more air than most bladed fans. I love that the air can be diverted out the sides of the unit for when you want to filter the air, but not get a draft as you sleep. I also love that you can set not only the angle it oscillates through, but where it oscillates, so it doesn't blow on the kids' faces at night, nor blow papers off my desk in the office.

The magic happens with the software which, side from controlling the fan, allows me to monitor the air quality both inside and outside the house. I can see for example, that when I first turn it on in a bedroom, there is a considerable amount particulate (mostly pollen) in the room, but after an hour, the air is very clean. the clean air is immediately noticeable when you walk into the room. I can then turn the fan to night mode (very quiet) and it will manage itself if the air quality drops again.

Thanks to the filtration capabilities of the Dyson, my kids sleep much better and have far less allergy symptoms through the night in particular. I'm now looking to get another two of these (but with heating as well).

The only area I feel could be improved is that the app's voice control only works with Alexa, but not Google Home or Apple Homekit yet (Oct '18). In Australia, both of these are more popular than Alexa for home automation.
